Report of the 36th Annual Meeting of the QPMPA held
on Sunday, 23 May 2010 at Suburban Club, Kakkanad, Kochi

The State President Dr. Joseph Stephen at 11 am called the inaugural session of 36th Annual General Body Meeting of the QPMPA to order at the Suburban Club, Kakkanad on Sunday, 23 May 2010, the QPICON 2010 venue. The Chief Guest Hon’ble Mr. Justice P. R. Raman took his chair on the dais as requested by the ceremony master. Flag salutation and self-introduction followed. Dr. V. C. Mammen, the Org. Com. Chairman welcomed the gathering.

In obituary reference the demise of Dr. K. K. Chakrapani of Kalpetta, Dr. George Thomas of Karunagappally and Dr. P. M. Shenoy of Kannur announced and members stood in silence for a minute praying for the departed souls.

Dr. Joseph Stephen, the State President, thanked the members for accepting him with his multitude of deficiencies and inexperience. He informed the house that he is stepping down after three years as the State President of QPMPA to take up bigger responsibilities after converting it as a national organisation.

He spoke of the various issues haunting the profession and private practitioners and the achievements of the QPMPA during the last three years. As a token of appreciation, he then presented gifts to few of the members. Before concluding, Dr. Stephen requested the members that in this fast world we must take steps to reduce stress by adopting effective lifestyle management.

Hon’ble Mr. Justice P. R. Raman, the Chief Guest spoke next. He said that God alone has the right to judge human beings and He acts through human beings, knowing well that it is human nature to commit errors. Healing is also a divine function and that is delegated to human beings to commit errors. Thus, we got judges, doctors and error as a common factor!

Touching puranas the Justice said that Lord Shiva has conducted the first transplantation operation by giving Daksha the head of a goat. Profession is a paid service and not an occupation like other paid jobs. The primary duty of a doctor is to ensure health of fellow human beings. The State has given the doctors the right, the authority, and the licence to practice the profession. However, every right has a corresponding duty, said the Judge.

He then quoted many judgments that have helped doctors in many ways. He concluded saying, “You who are all blessed with expertise must become a blessing to humanity”, and went on to light the lamp to mark the inauguration of the 36th annual conference.

The President thanked the Chief Guest for the touching speech and presented a memento to the Judge.

The other items in the agenda were taken up one by one. Dr. B. S. Rao, the Returning Officer appointed by the Annual SWC stepped in next and invited nominations for the vacant posts. The name of Dr. M. A. Koya was the only one that was proposed and seconded by the General Body and the returning Officer Dr. Rao declared Dr. Koya elected unanimously as the State President. Dr. K.
