| QPICON 2000: Qualified Private Medical Practitioners' Association Report of the 26th State Annual Conference — QPICON 2000 — North Paravur - Sunday, 7th May 2000 Venue of the Conference was Dr. C. V. Srinivasan Nagar, Municipal Town Hall, North Paravur The Organising Committee had arranged a week long programme in connection with the Millennium
State Conference — "QPICON 2000." The first one was the "AIDS Awareness Programme" held on 1st May. Free 'Speciality Medical Camps' were held in all the major hospitals during this week — 1.5.2000 to 5.5.2000. These camps .benefited thousands of the needy patients, and the whole town had a festival atmosphere for the whole week. The Annual Central Working Committee Meeting was held on 6.5.2000 at Cee Cee Towers, N. Paravur at 4.30 pm. This was well attended and was followed by variety
entertainments and banquet at the same venue. It was a very cordial get-together of QPMPA families and well-wishers. The entertainments included orchestra songs by our family members, mimicry, etc., which went on till midnight. The official beginning of QPICON 2000 was marked by Flag Hoisting on 7.5.2000 by the State President Dr. O. Baby at 8.30 am. First Academic Session After registration and breakfast the First Academic Session was held. It was sponsored and presented by
Medical Trust Hospital, Ernakulam.
1.Dr. Georgy K. Ninan, Nephrologist, presented a paper on 'Leptospirosis' a continuing challenge. 2.Dr. Ashok Raj Kaul, Plastic Surgeon, presented a paper on 'Advancement in reconstructive and microvascular surgery.' 3.Dr. Jose Chacko Pariappuram, Thoracic Surgeon, presented 'Off Pump' CABG: Perfection of Anastomosis with Octopus - 2. Inaugural Session The Inaugural session began with a sweet and melodious prayer by Master Anoop.
Dr. B. V. Bhat invoked the Flag Salutation. Dr. O. Baby presided over the meeting. Dr. M. N. Venkiteshwaran in his welcome address gave a call to each and everyone in the fraternity of Private Health Care System to unite under the QPMPA and welcomed the distinguished guests and the members. Presidential address Dr. O. Baby in his speech enumerated the various issues before us and sought relief for our fraternity from legislations like Dangerous & Offensive Trade Licence, Shops
and Commercial Establishments Act, Weights and Measures Act, etc. Inaugural address The Hon'ble Electricity Minister of Kerala Sri S. Sarma inaugurated the Conference by lighting the Kuthuvilakku accompanied by Dr. O. Baby, Dr. B. V. Bhat, Dr. P. G. R. Pillai, Mr. P. Raju, MLA, Adv. N. P. Ali, Mr. Dhanapalan, Dr. M. N. Venkiteshwaran and Dr. N. Madhu. Sri S. Sarma mentioned in his speech that he will see that the hospitals are not categorised on par with Cracker shops or factories,
and he sincerely said that Offensive and Dangerous Trade Licence should not be implemented on private hospitals. Release of Souvenir Dr. P. G. R. Pillai, Principal of Cooperative Medical College, Kochi, released the souvenir. He applauded QPMPA for all its achievements during the last 26 years. He stressed the need to get all the individual doctors and institutions in Private Sector of Health Care System into the QPMPA for strengthening the fraternity. Awards The State Secretary
Dr. B. V. Bhat announced the State Awards of QPMPA for the year 1999–2000. The following were the award winners: 1.Dr. C. E. Oommen Memorial Ever Rolling Shield: For the Best Local Branch of QPMPA : Kottayam Branch — Award received by Dr. N. D. Scariachan. 2.Dr. K. N. Pillai Memorial Shield for the Best Local Branch Secretary: Dr. N. Madhu, North Paravur Branch. 3.Presidents Ever Rolling Shield: For the Branch enrolling maximum members: Kannur Branch — received by Dr. N. Jayanth.
4.Individual Award for enrolling maximum number of new members into QPMPA — Dr. O. Baby. 5.Special Appreciation Award: For Organising Committee Chairman, QPICON 2000 — Dr. M. N. Venkiteshwaran. 6. Special Appreciation Award: For Organising Secretary, QPICON 2000 — Dr. N. Madhu. The awards were presented by Hon'ble Minister S. Sarma. Felicitations Felicitations were offered by Mr. P. Raju MLA, Advocate N. P. Ali, Municipal Chairman and Mr. Dhanapalan, Vice President KPCC.
Vote of thanks Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. N. Madhu and the session came to an end at 11.45 am. Necrology Memorial service for the members who left us during this year was rendered with projection and citations. Members who left us for their heavenly abode are:

Francis and Mrs. Venkiteshwaran conducted the ceremony in a most befitting manner. Necrology session was sponsored by Bal Pharma. Second Academic Session The Second Academic Session was a workshop on "Managing a Small Hospital" sponsored by Nicholas Pirmal. Brig. Dr. M. A. George, Don Bosco Hospital, N. Paravur was the Chairman and he introduced the faculties to the audience.
1. Dr. P. G. R. Pillai spoke on 'A cordial doctor-patient relationship.' 2. Dr. Prem Kainikkara,
Muthoot Hospital, Kozhenchery, spoke on 'Finance and Material Management and also on Tax laws.' 3. Dr. Venugopalan Nair, Retired Chairman, Pollution Control Board, spoke on 'Hospital Waste Management.' The above session was followed by lunch. Third Academic Session The Third Academic Session was on "Innovative Treatment Modalities."
1. Dawn of a new millennium in Dermatology was presented by National Skin and Hair Care Centre, Kochi. 2. Newer Horizon in Trauma Care
Training by Dr. C. G. Reghu, Ernakulam Medical Centre, Kochi. 3. Recent Advances in Diagnostic Imaging by Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. The scientific sessions were well attended to and interacted by the audience. General Body Meeting: 26th Annual General Body Meeting was convened at 4.00 pm with Dr. O. Baby in chair. Secretary Dr. B. V. Bhat invoked the flag salutation and presented the 26th Annual Report. Key issues such as Drug Licence, Fund raising for QPMPA State
Office Building at Kochi were discussed in detail. Donation coupons for Building Fund were released. Audited accounts for 1998-99 were read and passed. Meeting came to a close at 5.30 pm after vote of thanks by Dr. N. Madhu.
